Dignity in Education: The EmpowerHer Program's Impact at Vosloorus Comprehensive Secondary School

Empowering Young Girls: A Successful Pad Drive at Vosloorus Comprehensive Secondary School

Imagine missing school simply because you don't have access to basic sanitary products. For many girls in South Africa, this isn’t just a hypothetical scenario—it’s a harsh reality. Period poverty, the lack of access to affordable menstrual products, forces about 30% of girls in South Africa to miss school regularly (Menstrual Hygiene Management, 2018). This absence isn’t just about a few missed days; it’s a systemic issue affecting their education, self-esteem, and future opportunities. According to research by UNICEF, as of 2020, one in ten girls in sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa, misses school during their menstrual period due to a lack of access to menstrual products.

To combat this, the Ntate Jane Foundation organized a pad drive on the 7th of August at Vosloorus Comprehensive Secondary School as part of its EmpowerHer Program. This initiative is central to the foundation’s mission of actively combating period poverty by providing essential sanitary products and period education to girls in need. The EmpowerHer Program ensures that girls can attend school confidently and with dignity, breaking the cycle of absenteeism and empowering them to reach their full potential.

The atmosphere at Vosloorus Comprehensive Secondary School during the event was one of hope and empowerment. The Ntate Jane Foundation distributed more than 1,100 packets of pads to the pupils. "This is more than just giving pads," stated Mahadi Mosia, the founder of the foundation. "It’s about giving our girls the opportunity to succeed without unnecessary hindrances." The smiles and gratitude from the girls highlighted the immediate impact of the drive. "I can now go to school without worrying," shared one pupil, her confidence visibly bolstered.

Period poverty is not just a health issue; it also has significant economic implications. When girls miss school due to a lack of sanitary products, they risk falling behind academically, which can lead to higher dropout rates and reduced job prospects (UNICEF, 2020). The South African government has taken steps to address this issue, such as removing VAT on sanitary products in 2019 and implementing free sanitary product distribution in some provinces like the Western Cape. However, these efforts only address part of the challenge, leaving a substantial gap that initiatives like the Ntate Jane Foundation’s EmpowerHer Program are striving to fill.

The EmpowerHer Program goes beyond just providing sanitary products. It also focuses on supporting young girls by providing essential toiletries, puberty education, and wellness support. By addressing both the physical and educational needs of these girls, the program ensures that they are better equipped to handle the challenges of adolescence and can focus on their studies without the burden of period poverty.

The Ntate Jane Foundation extends its deepest gratitude to the generous donors whose contributions made this event possible. Your support is critical in changing lives and empowering the next generation of young women.

Looking ahead, the Ntate Jane Foundation is more determined than ever to dismantle the barriers that prevent girls from reaching their full potential. With continued support, we can ensure that every girl in South Africa has the opportunity to attend school with dignity, confidence, and the promise of a bright future.
